Changing direction

By Veronika Robinson

Did you make your New Year’s resolutions? Do you have all sorts of plans and dreams for 2013?

By my nature, I’m a planner. I like to have a dream, then make it happen. And to be honest, it doesn’t matter if it’s just a daily to-do-list, it gives me an inner satisfaction to feel like I can tick them off the list as ‘done’.

But with all the best will in the world, there’s only so much control we can have over our lives. Sometimes things spring out from left field and we’re left spinning and wondering ‘what the hell just happened?’ We’re thrown off course, and wonder if we’ll ever find our feet.

I’m no dancer, but I do know that when dancers have to spin a lot they make sure they have a focal point in the room to give them a sense of where they are.

This week, my family had a huge shock that has left us spinning. It’s certainly not how I expected the new year to start. The daily rhythm has flown out the window without a second glance. Some things don’t change though ~ cats still need feeding! ~ as we find ourselves in a completely new daily pattern.

As my daughters and I spin through these days, my focal point as ever is ‘family’ and the love we have for each other, and those beautiful people I am honoured to call friends. They’re there, as I spin, holding, loving and being. They are the ones reminding me to breathe, and that things will be okay.

When life changes direction, we can run fighting, kicking and screaming or we can take wobbly steps and go with the flow into unfamiliar territory.

If you find yourself changing directions, I hope that you too are blessed with the love of beautiful, kind and considerate, loving friends to hug and hold you. Let them be your focal point.
